Men’s Health Physiotherapy

Confidential men’s health physiotherapy for incontinence, pelvic pain, erectile dysfunction and bladder issues.

If you are experiencing incontinence either before or after prostate surgery, chronic pelvic pain (prostatitis), an overactive bladder, erectile dysfunction or pudendal neuralgia you are not alone. Research shows that:

  • 510,000 men are living with or experiencing life after prostate cancer.
  • 1 in 8 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer, rising to 1 in 4 for black men. Of those who are treated with surgery, up to 60% may experience urinary incontinence after their procedure.
  • An enlarged prostate leads to lower urinary tract symptoms in around 40% of men over 60. For approximately half of these men, it has a notable impact on their quality of life.
  • Every year, 1 in 25 men aged over 40 will experience some form of urinary leakage.
  • Acute prostatitis occurs in about 1 in every 10,000 men in the UK.
  • Erectile dysfunction is thought to be experienced by 1 in 10 men.

When it comes to their health, we know that men can be less likely to seek help and will suffer in silence. But the fact you are here on this page is a positive first step because we are here to help.

At Holy Cross Physiotherapy Clinic, Ed Carroll is our highly experienced physiotherapist who specialises in the treatment of men’s health issues.

He offers confidential assessments and treatment for men experiencing any of the following:

  • Pre and post prostate surgery incontinence
  • Erectile dysfunction concerns
  • Chronic pelvic pain syndrome
  • Pudendal neuralgia
  • Pelvic floor dysfunction.

We know that these are sensitive subjects and that this may be preventing you from accessing care, but physiotherapy is an effective treatment, and Ed is here to guide you. He will support you with looking after your body, improving your wellbeing, and tackling the challenges which are unique to you.

Answers to your questions

What exactly is men’s health physiotherapy?

Men’s Health Physiotherapy is a specialism of physiotherapy concerned with supporting men with incontinence, sexual dysfunction and pelvic pain. This can result either after prostatectomy surgery or through sporting activities e.g. cycling.

What happens at the men’s health initial assessment?

We will begin by taking a detailed history about your symptoms, medical history, medication, lifestyle, hobbies. You will also be asked about urinary and bowel patterns, as well as sexual function. We understand that discussing these topics can feel daunting, particularly if this is your first time at a men’s health appointment. However, our aim is to put you at ease and provide a safe and comfortable environment in which to share your concerns.

Do I need to bring anything with me to my initial assessment?

It is helpful to bring any clinic letters or test results relating to what you have had done to date. This will assist us with building an accurate medical history.

Will there be an internal examination?

No. Internal examinations are not required for post prostatectomy, pelvic pain and erectile dysfunction patients. Ultrasound scanning can be used to check pelvic floor activation and control.

Is it normal to feel embarrassed?

Yes, it is. Historically men have not been encouraged to seek help with symptoms around pelvic health, sexual dysfunction and incontinence and even if they were the services were not widely available to them. As a result, these conversations can feel unfamiliar or embarrassing, despite their importance. We hope that, over time, this becomes easier.

All assessments take place in a private room and are booked under ‘Men’s’ Health Physiotherapy’ at reception.

Can I bring somebody with me to the appointment?

You are welcome to bring somebody to all or some of the appointment. We can also offer a chaperone upon advance request.

What might be included in my treatment programme?

Treatment may include teaching of pelvic floor exercises, discussion around bladder retraining, manual therapy, breathing exercises and positions.

How long does treatment usually take to show results?

Results vary from person to person depending on their symptoms. However, to manage expectations, it is better to think of recovery in terms of months rather than weeks.

How often will I need to come for appointments?

Appointment frequency can vary but more commonly monthly follow ups are required.

Is the assessment and treatment completely private and confidential?

All information shared is treated as strictly private and confidential in accordance with our medical records policy. You will be consented in advance on occasions where information may need to be shared with other professionals.

Consultations take place in a closed treatment room.
