Find out more about neurological physiotherapy and who can benefit.
What is neurological physiotherapy
Neurological physiotherapy (or neurophysiotherapy) is a specialised service for people who have acquired disabilities from medical conditions or injuries affecting the brain, spinal cord or peripheral nerves.
Neurophysiotherapy utilises a wide variety of neurological principles and techniques depending on the presenting condition and the area of the nervous system that is affected. It utilises specific handling techniques and movement patterns that facilitate normal and useful movements. These are also designed to inhibit unwanted movements or muscle tone that gets in the way of function.
In certain occasions, the use of specialised equipment or assistive technology can hasten or complement the manual intervention or exercise programme. This can come in the form of various treatment modalities such as, electrical stimulation, shockwave, and hydrotherapy. Various supportive equipment is also available to facilitate standing or walking issues.
The treatment strategy and therapeutic modality of choice will always be tailored to meet your needs ensuring, together, we maximise recovery, manage unwanted symptoms and help achieve therapy goals.
Conditions that can benefit from neurological physiotherapy
Neurological physiotherapy can help with conditions such as:
- Neurodegenerative conditions: eg multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease
- Neuromuscular conditions: eg Muscular dystrophy, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis
- Brain conditions: eg stroke, traumatic brain injury, hypoxic brain injury
- Spine conditions: eg spinal cord injury, spinal muscular atrophy
- Peripheral nerve conditions: Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS), peripheral nerve injury, carpal tunnel syndrome, Bell’s palsy
- Cerebral Palsy
- Balance or vestibular disorders
Your treatment plan
Your neuro physiotherapist will make a comprehensive initial assessment of your presenting condition and how it affects your current abilities. They are trained to analyse normal and abnormal body movements, and how they affect daily activities and tasks.
Based on the issues they identify and your goals, they will then recommend treatment options and formulate a tailored management plan, including exercise programmes that will help you maximise your potential for physical rehabilitation. This may also include aquatic physiotherapy (hydrotherapy) that is available in our state-of-the-art facility.
Our team has extensive training and experience in treating severe neurological conditions. They can also point you in the right direction if further specialist intervention is required, such as focal spasticity management and special seating.
Compassion is at the heart of our service so you can expect expert attention within a caring environment.
Costs
A one-hour neurological physiotherapy assessment is £90, and a 45-minute follow-up is £80.
