Falling over is one of the most common accidents experienced by older people. The resulting injuries can result in hospitalisation and can lead to a loss of confidence and independence.
Recognising that prevention is so much better than cure, the team from The Physiotherapy Centre in Haslemere has designed a new programme for people who would like to improve their balance.
Therapy Services Manager, Rasheed Meeran says: “We see a lot of patients who require physiotherapy or hydrotherapy to help them recuperate from a hip replacement or a broken bone. Many of these situations come about because of a fall, which is why we decided to put together an exercise programme that aims to focus on specific strength exercises, flexibility and balance. The exercises we offer have been proven to help reduce falls, increase strength and improve co-ordination.”
To ensure safety, a qualified physiotherapist guides the class through the exercises. Free From Falls is held on a Tuesday from 10.30am to 11.15am in The Physiotherapy Centre’s light and airy gym. People wishing to join the class should be able to walk 25 metres independently or with a walking aid and will need to complete a referral form or call 01428 647647.
